Wheat...West coast wheat prices saw an uptick against higher futures
this week, with white wheat hitting and holding $6.40. White wheat is
being supported by recent export demand, and the flat bid structure into
January indicates near-term buying interest by exporters. Protein wheat
bids showed hard red winter basis remaining defensive on current harvest
pressure, while dark northern spring bids gained week-on-week.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported 14.7 million bushels of export demand
for U.S. wheat over the past week, putting commitments for the new year
at 183 million, which is 21% below a year ago and 5% behind the 5-year
average pace. Hard red winter booked 6 million bushels to place sales
at 45 million, which is 50% below a year ago and 20% below the average
pace. White wheat reported 5.3 million bushels in sales and with 52
million in commitments is setting 55% above a year ago but 12% below
average. Hard red spring saw 4 million bushels in new sales, which puts
commitments at 54 million; 16% below a year ago and 8% below average.
Japan, Mexico and Thailand were the top buyers.
