The spring weather was been about ideal for planting.  The cold snap a week ago should now have hurt the crops around our area.  We could use a little rain and it sounds like we should get some this week.
The trade is thinking the percent of corn planted should be around 85% complete and soybeans 65% when the gov’t releases their numbers later today.  Parts of Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan are lagging because of wet weather.  There are areas of western Iowa, Nebraska, and southwest Minnesota that haven’t progressed like in past years.  Argentina bean harvest is progressing with drier weather.  We still don’t know what kind of quality issues they’re going to have with this year’s crop.  Will they be able to meet their meal protein requirements?  We haven’t heard much about the Brazilian corn crop.  Is that good or bad?
The markets have been pretty strong given the start of our growing season.  The fund managers like all kinds of commodities.  Will most of them defend their long positions or will the fundaments finally take over?  Corn basis has improved since the first of the month.   Farmer selling has dried up for the short term.  We’ve seen these prices before.   Bean basis continues to be weak.  The processors bought a lot of beans as the board raced higher.  They need to work through this supply before basis gets any better.  The river bid has drawn beans away from CR.  At some point basis values should reflect the flow of beans.
The cement receiving leg drive has been repaired and is working.  Good for another 39 years!  The whse/shop footings and stem wall have been poured.  The dirt work has been completed on the new wet bin.  Weather permitting work should progress on both projects.
We will be closed next Monday for Memorial Day.
Have a great week.
